How to check a screen for gradient banding

A good gradient appears as a smooth transition rather than a stack of visible stripes. Full-screen gradients make banding easier to see in gray and color ramps, especially in dim tones where panel electronics and image processing can have a larger effect.

For a more reliable result

View the gradient at 100% browser zoom and avoid screenshots or compressed video of the test.
Compare grayscale with color gradients; a problem visible only in one ramp may point to a different processing path.
Temporarily compare standard and enhanced picture modes because sharpening, contrast enhancement and limited color depth can alter the result.
If the same bands appear on multiple devices when viewing captured content, the source image may be banded rather than the display.
