A motion test helps you see whether a moving object stays clear or leaves fuzzy smears, duplicate-looking trails, bright halos or dark inverse-ghosting artifacts. Comparing several speeds and color transitions is more useful than watching one plain moving block.
How to use this improved motion test
Start in full screen and follow the center of the moving target with your eyes rather than staring at one fixed point. Run the same stage at slow, medium and fast speeds. If your monitor offers overdrive or response-time modes, change one setting at a time and repeat the same stage so the comparison is fair.
- Smearing: the target stretches or loses fine detail while moving.
- Ghosting: a darker or lighter copy-like trail follows the object.
- Inverse ghosting: aggressive overdrive can create a bright or dark halo on the opposite side of the transition.
- Scrolling clarity: letters should remain as readable as the display technology and refresh rate allow.
How to interpret blur, trailing and overshoot
Motion clarity depends on several things at once: refresh rate, pixel transition speed, display persistence, overdrive tuning, browser animation timing and how your eyes track the moving object. The six stages intentionally use different contrast and detail patterns because a panel may look clean on one transition and show artifacts on another.
For a more reliable comparison
- Confirm the operating system is using the refresh rate you intend to test.
- Compare the same stage and speed before and after changing a monitor response or overdrive setting.
- Do not judge from a screenshot or screen recording; those cannot reproduce what your eyes saw during motion.
- Use gray and RGB stages as well as black/white because different pixel transitions can behave differently.
What this test cannot confirm
This browser test does not measure a laboratory gray-to-gray response time or motion-picture response time. The frame estimate shown in the tool is only an approximation of browser animation timing and should not be treated as the monitor’s certified refresh rate.
