Complete Monitor Testing Checklist: Screen, Motion, Color & Inputs
A practical step-by-step monitor testing checklist for dead pixels, uniformity, gradients, motion blur, sharpness, resolution and connected inputs.

A monitor can look perfectly normal during everyday browsing and still have problems that only appear on solid colors, gradients, fast motion or small text. A useful test therefore checks several display behaviors rather than relying on one pattern.
1. Start with native resolution and 100% browser zoom
Before judging the panel, confirm that the operating system is using the display's intended resolution. Non-native scaling can soften text and fine details, creating a false impression of a panel defect.
2. Check dead and stuck pixels
Use full-screen black, white, red, green and blue. Scan the screen methodically from corner to corner. A dark point on every bright color can indicate a non-lighting pixel; a point fixed to one color can indicate a stuck subpixel.
3. Inspect uniformity and gradients
Gray is especially useful for seeing tint, dirty-screen effect and uneven brightness. A smooth grayscale gradient should transition gradually; obvious steps may be banding caused by the display, graphics path, content depth or image processing.
4. Check brightness and contrast
Look for separation near black and near white. If dark shades all merge together, shadow detail may be crushed. If near-white steps disappear, highlights may be clipping.
5. Test text sharpness
Compare small and large text, difficult character pairs and thin one-pixel lines. If one browser looks softer than another, scaling or rendering may be involved rather than the panel itself.
6. Test motion and response
Run moving detail at slow, medium and fast speeds. Look for trails, dark smears, bright halos or inverse ghosting. Compare picture modes because aggressive overdrive can change the result.
7. Recheck your connections
For an external monitor, verify the cable, port, refresh rate and color mode. A display can support a high refresh rate while a particular cable or adapter limits the signal.
What a browser test cannot certify
Browser tests are excellent for visual observation, but they cannot replace a colorimeter, oscilloscope or service-center measurement. Use them to identify repeatable symptoms and decide what needs deeper investigation.
