Dead Pixels: Types, Causes and What You Can Do
Learn the difference between dead, stuck and hot pixels, what causes them, how to test safely and when repair or warranty service makes sense.
The phrase “dead pixel” is often used for any tiny pixel defect, but several different faults can look similar. Identifying the behavior across multiple solid colors is more informative than judging one normal image.
Dead pixel
A dead pixel typically remains dark when neighboring pixels light normally. It may be easier to see on white or bright solid colors.
Stuck pixel
A stuck subpixel may remain red, green, blue or another fixed color. Because LCD pixels are built from colored subpixels, a single failed state can create a bright colored dot.
Hot or bright pixel
A bright point that remains visible on dark backgrounds can be described as a hot or bright pixel. Terminology varies between display technologies and manufacturers.
Can software fix a dead pixel?
Software cannot repair a physically failed transistor or damaged panel. Rapid color cycling can sometimes be used as a harmless observation/exerciser for a suspected stuck pixel, but it should not be represented as a guaranteed repair.
When warranty matters
Manufacturers may use pixel-defect thresholds that differ by panel class, region and product line. Photograph the symptom, record where it appears and check the exact warranty terms for your model.
A browser test cannot certify the electrical cause of a pixel problem, but it can make a repeatable defect much easier to document. If the same point remains abnormal through multiple colors, applications and restarts, save a clear photo and compare the manufacturer’s pixel-defect or warranty policy.
- Restart the device and retest before assuming the fault is permanent.
- Use the display at native resolution so one image pixel maps cleanly to the panel.
- Run several solid-color screens and note whether the defect changes with color.
- Record the location and appearance if you may need warranty support.
- Avoid pressing hard on the panel, opening the display or using aggressive physical methods that can create additional damage.
What you can safely try
White, black, red, green and blue backgrounds are useful because each exposes a different failure pattern. A pixel that is dark on white may be easier to see as a dead or non-emitting pixel. A bright point on black can reveal a stuck subpixel. Red, green and blue screens help determine whether only one color channel is behaving abnormally. Gray is useful for finding subtle brightness non-uniformity around a suspicious point.
Which colors reveal different pixel problems
Before deciding that a pixel has failed, clean the display carefully and repeat the check on several solid colors. Dust on the surface usually changes appearance when viewed from a different angle, while a true pixel defect remains locked to the same screen coordinate. A software or browser artifact may move when the page is scrolled or disappear after a restart. A physical pixel defect normally stays in exactly the same place across applications and test colors.
