What is the Camera Resolution Test – Check Webcam Video Size Online?
Check the resolution reported by a laptop, phone, tablet, USB webcam or compatible camera in your browser.
Reported camera resolution
Browser-reported resolution can differ from the sensor’s advertised maximum because of driver, browser and performance settings.
How to run this test
- Connect or enable the camera.
- Select Start camera and grant browser permission.
- Choose the correct camera from the list when more than one is available.
- Inspect focus, color, exposure, motion and the reported resolution.
For the broadest camera guidance, see the main camera and webcam tester.
What camera resolution does a browser actually report?
A webcam may be advertised with a maximum resolution, but the browser receives the resolution negotiated for the current video stream. That active size can depend on browser constraints, camera mode, USB bandwidth and operating-system settings.
For a more reliable result
- Start the camera and read the active video dimensions after the stream is running.
- If several cameras are available, select each one rather than assuming the first device is the external webcam.
- Compare the browser result with system camera settings before concluding the hardware cannot reach its advertised mode.
- Remember that a high pixel count does not by itself guarantee good focus, low noise or image quality.
What this test cannot confirm
The tester reports the browser stream, not every capture mode the camera hardware may support. Dedicated camera software may expose additional resolutions or frame rates.
