How to check a laptop webcam before a call or purchase

A laptop camera test should confirm more than whether a picture appears. Check that the correct camera opens, the preview is stable, focus is acceptable at normal sitting distance and the browser reports a sensible stream resolution.

For a more reliable result

Open the test in normal room lighting and clean the small camera lens gently if the image looks hazy.
If the preview is black, verify the physical privacy shutter and operating-system camera permission.
Test the built-in microphone separately because a working webcam does not guarantee that its microphone path is active.
