Why are gray screens useful for display testing?

Gray fields make subtle brightness and tint differences easier to see than strong primary colors. They are commonly used for visual inspection of uniformity, dirty-screen effect, vertical banding and near-black behavior.

50% gray for general uniformity

Start with 50% Gray and look for areas that appear warmer, cooler, brighter or darker than the rest of the panel. Some variation can be normal, especially near edges.

5% and 20% gray for OLED and near-black checks

Dark gray presets can make near-black banding and uneven low-level luminance more visible. Test in a dim environment, but avoid assuming every faint pattern is a defect.

Dirty-screen effect

Dirty-screen effect often appears as cloudy, streaky or darker regions during camera pans or flat backgrounds. A gray screen is a simple way to inspect it before comparing with real moving content.

Gray downloads and long duration

Download flat gray PNG files for reference or keep the browser page open with an optional timer. Long-duration mode is a utility, not a calibration procedure.

How to use the full-screen color safely

  1. Set your display to a comfortable brightness.
  2. Choose the exact color or shade you need.
  3. Select a duration only when you need a long session.
  4. Keep Screen Awake enabled if you want the browser to request Wake Lock.
  5. Press Exit or the browser Escape control when finished.

Long-duration color screens are browser utilities. They do not override every operating-system sleep, battery, thermal or screen-protection rule.

Frequently asked questions

Which gray level should I start with?

Start with 50% gray for general uniformity, then use darker gray for near-black issues.

Does a gray screen measure uniformity?

No. It supports visual inspection only; objective measurement requires calibrated hardware.

What is dirty-screen effect?

It is a visible nonuniform pattern that can resemble smudges or patches, especially during panning scenes or flat colors.
